5 ways to burn a scented candle evenly and cleanly

Sometimes the candle burns unevenly, which can be annoying, especially if we want to keep the packaging beautiful as a decoration. What are the causes of uneven burning of a candle? Can this be prevented? We present five simple ways to ensure that your candle burns evenly and cleanly.

Have you ever bought a beautiful-looking scented candle in decorative glass or ceramics and unfortunately it did not burn evenly? Do you want to use the full fragrance power of a scented candle, but there is wax left on the walls? Are you wondering why your candle started smoking and its packaging turned black? Is there any way to avoid these problems and ensure optimal, clean and even burning of the scented candle? Here are 5 ways to burn candles evenly and cleanly. Do you know them all?

1. My candle "tunnels" and the wax stays on the walls. What am I doing wrong?

The most common cause of candle tunneling, i.e. wax remaining on the walls, is burning the candle for too short a time. If you burn the candle too briefly, the flame does not have time to sufficiently dissolve the wax and the so-called tunnel. What can you do to avoid this? Always follow the recommended burning time for a scented candle. What is this time? The approximate time depends on many factors, mainly on the type of wax the candle is made of. The general rule is that it is recommended to burn candles made of a mixture of vegetable waxes for a minimum of 2 to 2.5 hours, and candles made of mineral wax (paraffin) for 3 to 4 hours.

However, sometimes it may happen that the candle will fully dissolve in its entire volume faster (i.e. a so-called "pool" will be created), usually this applies to candles with a larger number of wicks. It may also happen that despite the recommended burning time, the "pool" has not formed. Usually, in such a situation, the cause should be sought in the mismatch of the wick to the dimensions of the candle, too low room temperature and the existence of... a draft that disturbs the burning of the candle.

To sum up, in order to avoid "tunneling" of the candle, it is recommended to adhere to the approximate burning time of the candle - it can be assumed that it is as long as a "pool" is created, i.e. the wax in the candle dissolves over the entire volume. In the photo below we see candles burned for far too short a time, the tunneling phenomenon is visible. Wick too long.

Why does the candle tunnel? Why is there wax left in the candle?

2. My candle burns unevenly, with wax left on one side. Why?

If we have ruled out the phenomenon of "tunneling", look for the cause in... the ground on which the candle stands. This seemingly trivial reason may be crucial - if the scented candle is not placed on an even surface, it may result in uneven burning. Another cause of wax remaining on one side of the candle is the wrong positioning of the wick - if the wick is not in the center of the candle, the candle may burn out faster on one side. Sometimes the wick is crooked in only one part of the candle and after straightening it, the candle may continue to burn evenly.

Remember! If you have a candle with more wicks, like two or three wicks, always light all the wicks at once! If you only light one or two, tunneling and uneven burning will certainly occur, and the remaining wicks lit the next time may result in flooding the wick previously lit. Therefore, place the candle on a level surface, check that the wick is centrally located, and always light all wicks at once.

3. My candle started smoking and the glass got dirty. What happened?

If your candle has burned cleanly and evenly so far, look for the reason in the wick! A wick that is too long may cause the candle to smoke. So what length should the wick be? It is assumed that the optimal wick length is approximately 5 mm. If the wick is longer, the candle may smoke. Trim the wick before lighting the candle, this is very important. Remember that after trimming the wick, check whether any of its remnants have fallen into the candle, and if so, remove them. What if the candle has been lit for many hours and suddenly it starts smoking? Check the length of the wick - if the candle is burned for a very long time, the wick may curl and create a characteristic "mushroom". This is a clear signal to extinguish the candle and trim the wick.

If the candle smokes despite a properly trimmed wick, it may be in a draft that causes the candle to burn unevenly and smoke. Move the candle to a quiet place.

Candle still smoking? Perhaps the material from which it was made is to blame. Candles made from natural plant wax burn cleaner, while paraffin wax has a greater tendency to smoke. You can also choose soy candles available at the Candle World store.

4. I blew out the candle and soot appeared on the glass, why?

Never blow out a candle! To extinguish a candle, use a candle extinguisher. If you blow out the candle, the wick will glow and smoke. Always use a candle extinguisher to avoid soot.

5. The candle did not burn down to the bottom, there was a lot of wax left at the bottom.

This is a normal phenomenon. Reputable candle manufacturers recommend stopping burning the candle when the amount of wax reaches approximately 7-8 mm. This is important for safety reasons to minimize the risk of the glass container breaking and wax spilling out. Most candles are specifically designed to stop burning when this minimum amount of wax remains at the bottom. Want to know how to remove remaining wax?
